Cartagena may be protected by ancient stone walls, but hundreds of thousands of tourists still make their way inside every year. Stewing with art, music, commerce, history, and reggaeton, this beachside Caribbean paradise is truly one-of-a-kind. You'll remember the food, street art, and architecture for the rest of your life. And as for the nightlife, well, if you remember that, then you probably did it wrong.
While there is no specific "gayborhood" within this coastal stronghold of tourism, Cartagena still offers much in terms of gay clubs and inviting locales. For a taste of history, consider getting lost in the cobblestone alleys of Old Town. The centuries-old stone walls are remnants of a bygone time when Cartagena once endured piracy of the non-digital kind. Later, for a taste of day drinking, consider patronizing the bohemian Getsemani, which teems with street art, block parties, cafes, and shopping.
Notwithstanding its exuberant (if small) gay scene, Cartagena as a whole is very welcoming to LGBTQ travelers. Colombia, of course, has permitted same-sex marriage since 2016, whereas Cartagena itself is filled with same-sex couples -- both foreign and native -- who adore showing affection. The city even has an official Pride Festival every August, as well as an accompanying Rumours Festival, which may as well be a circuit party. And even if you miss the party, there's much more to Cartagena than dancing shirtless men. In every corner of town, there are enough arepas, landmarks, and sun-drenched shores to keep you busy all year round.
